2 Norman retailers again selling glass pipes and bongs

As of this month, Norman residents will be able to shop for bongs and glass pipes at the new Ziggyz Cannabis Co. on W. Main Street and The Friendly Market in its new location on Porter Avenue. The latter store had to close the doors at its former site in 2015 after two police raids resulted in inventory seizures.

The Norman Police Department, backed by the Cleveland County District Attorney's office, twice raided The Friendly Market for selling items that authorities claimed were drug paraphernalia. The store owner fought the case all the way to the state Supreme Court where he won a hard-fought victory. Yet, he still is negotiating with the Norman poilice to release the seized inventory from two years ago.

Prospective customers may wonder how they could be affected by purchasing glass pipes from these retailers. Under Oklahoma state law, those convicted on a first offense misdemeanor posssession of paraphernalia charges face penalties of a year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. Second and subsequent offenses are also misdemeanors, but the fines increase to $5,000 and $10,000, respectively.

The district attorney's office reiterated its resolve to continue prosecuting those found in possession of glass pipes, with the district attorney affirming, "Of course we will."

Where does that leave customers of the two retail outlets? Are they in violation of the law if they buy a bong or glass pipe from either merchant?

That's uncertain at this point. While the matter appeared to have been settled by the Oklahoma Supreme Court, it is indeed possible that someone could wind up arrested for buying a pipe here in Norman. An aggressive criminal defense attorney can assist you with mounting a vigorous defense to the charges should that become necessary.
